From Chinook salmon crushing spoons on Lake Michigan to steelhead running the Muskegon River, from walleye stacked on Lake Erie to wild brook trout in Upper Peninsula streams — the Great Lakes State is a fishing paradise.

Michigan has 11,000+ inland lakes, 36,000 miles of rivers and streams, and 3,288 miles of Great Lakes shoreline — more than any other state. Here's how to break it down by zone and target species.
Great Lakes Salmon & Trout
— Chinook, Coho & Lake Trout CountryLake Michigan and Lake Huron host the most productive salmon and lake trout fisheries in the world outside of Alaska. Chinook salmon up to 40+ lbs crash spoons and flies in September. Coho run in October. Lake trout hold in deep water year-round. The Pere Marquette River and Muskegon River are the two most famous salmon and steelhead rivers in the Midwest.
For Great Lakes trolling: 8'6" medium-heavy rod with 30 lb braid and a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader. Spoons (Dreamweaver, Stinger) at 40–80 feet on a downrigger. For river salmon: 9'0" medium-heavy spinning rod with 15 lb braid and egg sacs or Kwikfish.
Muskegon River (Newaygo)
The Muskegon River below Croton Dam is the most productive steelhead river in Michigan. The fall salmon run peaks in September–October with Chinook up to 35 lbs. Spring steelhead (March–May) are the main event — fish egg sacs, beads, or Rapala Husky Jerks in natural colors. The DU Tech rule: fish the seams between fast and slow water, not the main current. Steelhead rest in the transition zones.
Pere Marquette River (Baldwin)
The Pere Marquette is a federally designated Wild and Scenic River — one of the finest steelhead rivers in the lower 48. The PM holds wild steelhead (not hatchery fish) that are stronger, faster, and more acrobatic than stocked fish. Use 8–10 lb fluorocarbon tippet and small egg patterns or nymphs. The PM is catch-and-release only for wild steelhead in certain sections — check MDNR regulations before fishing.
Michigan Cold Water Rules
Michigan fishing means cold water, big lakes, and fast-changing weather. These are the rules the DU Tech Team follows every trip.
Layer Up — Great Lakes Cold
Lake Michigan water temps stay below 50°F until late June. Even in September, a sudden northwest wind can drop air temps 20 degrees in an hour. Always bring a waterproof layer on the boat.
The Lake Michigan Wind Rule
Lake Michigan can build 8-foot waves in under 2 hours when a northwest wind kicks up. Check the NOAA marine forecast before launching. If the forecast says 15+ mph from the NW, stay home.
Muskegon River Water Color
Clear water = fish are spooky, use natural colors and lighter line. Stained water = fish are aggressive, use chartreuse or orange egg sacs. Check the USGS gauge at Newaygo before driving.
Ice Fishing — Saginaw Bay
Saginaw Bay produces world-class yellow perch and walleye through the ice in January–February. Use a 4-inch auger, small tungsten jigs, and wax worms. Check ice thickness — 4 inches minimum for walking.
Great Lakes Downrigger Rule
For Lake Michigan Chinook salmon, run your downrigger balls at 60–80 feet in August–September. The thermocline sits at 50–70 feet — salmon stack just above it. Use a fish finder to locate the thermocline.
MDNR Regulations
Michigan has complex regulations — different rules for different rivers, different seasons for different species. Always check the current MDNR Fishing Guide at michigan.gov/dnr before fishing a new water.

The Muskegon River Seam Rule
Steelhead and salmon don't hold in the main current — they rest in the seams between fast and slow water. These seams form on the downstream edge of boulders, at the tail of pools, and along current breaks near the bank. Cast your presentation 3–4 feet upstream of the seam and let it drift naturally through the transition zone. The fish are there — you just have to find the seam.
Arrive before dawn — the best pools fill up fast on weekends
Check the USGS gauge at Newaygo — 1,500–3,000 cfs is ideal
Match egg sac color to water clarity — natural in clear, chartreuse in stained
Check the MDNR run report before driving — the run can be feast or famine
Lake Erie Walleye Blitz
The Lake Erie spring walleye run (April–May) is one of the most spectacular fishing events in the Midwest. Walleye stack up near the reefs and rocky points to spawn — you can catch 20+ fish in a morning. Troll Reef Runner crankbaits at 2.5 mph in 8–15 feet of water. The DU Tech Erie Rule: always check the wind forecast — Erie is shallow and can turn dangerous fast.
UP Brook Trout — The Topo Map Method
The best UP brook trout streams aren't on any fishing report. Download a USGS topo map, find a blue line draining into a larger river, and walk in. The fish have never seen a lure. Use a 5'6" ultralight rod with 4 lb mono and a small Mepps #0 spinner. Approach from downstream, keep your shadow off the water, and you'll catch wild brookies all day.
